Aromatherapy has been shown to carry many benefits in terms of wellness
and stress relief. For example, one study showed that aromatherapy does
indeed have an effect on brain waves, and can alter behavior. (Read
more about the benefits of aromatherapy.)
But not all scents are created equal, nor do they affect human
physiology and behavior in the same ways. As scents are inhaled, the smell travels across the olfactory nerves
located inside the nose and then up into the part of the brain that
controls our moods, our memories and our ability to learn. This area is
called the Limbic System and when stimulated it releases endorphins,
neurotransmitters and other 'feel-good' chemicals.Essential oils used in aromatherapy not only invigorate the senses, but they also have antifungal and antimicrobial properties. They work topically and as an inhalant yet stimulate the immune system to attack harmful bacteria, virus and fungi and further promote healing. According to "Alternative Medicine: The Definitive Guide" the use of aromatherapy is all natural and lacks the harsh side effects associated with ingested antibiotics.
